Subject Matter Expert: Wayne D. Erickson P.E., ScD

 

Wayne D. Erickson P.E., ScD, is an experienced chemical engineer and teacher. His professional experience began 1955 as a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force assigned to the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) at Langley Aeronautical Laboratory in Hampton, VA working on supersonic and hypersonic testing and research. He worked at NACA/NASA Langley as a research engineer, a supervisor of various research sections and branches, Senior Scientist for Langley Research Center and as Chief Scientist of various Divisions and Offices until 1995.

Special assignments included:

  • Apollo 13 Accident Review Board 4/70-6/70
  • Cambridge University, Cambridge, England (computational chemistry research)8/70-7/71
  • NASA Outlook for Space Study (evaluate national space objectives and related technology for 1980-2000)1974-1975
  • Energy Research & Development Administration (committee to advise Administrator on university relations programs and policy) 4/75-7/75
  • MIT, Cambridge, MA, Chemical Engineering (teaching)12/80-10/82
  • US Air Force Scientific Advisory Board 1981-1995
  • North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (teaching)8/90–5/91

Areas of competence and interest include: combustion, thermodynamics, computational chemistry, computational fluid dynamics, energy technology and separation processes. Additional more recent interests include membranes, nano-materials and algal-based fuel processes.

Mr. Erickson holds four degrees in Chemical Engineering: Michigan State University, BS 1954, MS 1955 and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, SM 1958, ScD 1962.
