"Engineer" ranked No. 17 in a recent list of Money Magazine's Best Jobs in America.  Jobs were ranked based on a number of criteria, including compensation, projected job growth and working environment.

 

Compensation and job growth were given double weight relative to the other categories.  "Software engineer" ranked No. 1 in the report with a 46.07% projected 10-year growth rate and an average salary of $80,427 per year.

 

"Engineer" had a 10-year projected growth rate of 13.38% and average pay of $76,100.  The report gave engineering a grade of "A" in the category of "Creativity".  The report ranked positions by stress levels, flexibility in hours and working environment, creativity, and how easy it is to enter and advance in the field.  Additionally, compensation and projected 10-year growth rate were considered and were given double weight relative to the other factors.

According to the report, 25% of engineers make more than $82,903 annually in total compensation (salary + bonuses) and 5% make more than $198,142.
