Overview

Obtaining professional registration as an Architectural Engineer can open new career paths for you and increase your value to your company or agency. Here is how to get started!

This course will introduce engineers to the Architectural Engineering (AE) professional registration examination developed by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) under the sponsorship of the Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI) of ASCE. This professional engineering registration examination, now offered in over 40 states, opens new career paths in professional engineering and new business opportunities for companies that employ professional engineers. You will learn about the development of the examination, which states offer it, requirements to take it, contents of the examination, and where to obtain study aids.

Professional engineers design buildings, but before 2003 there was no engineering registration that focused on the multiple aspects of building design. For example, a civil engineer wanting a career in building design was required to pass a traditional civil engineering registration examination covering topics such as transportation, hydraulics and hydrology, and water quality….which would likely be of little use during a career in building design. Similarly with others trained as, say, mechanical engineers and electrical engineers. The Architectural Engineering registration examination corrects this by providing an opportunity for candidates to demonstrate their knowledge in their primary building design activity (structural design, HVAC and plumbing, electrical systems, etc.) as well as the associated building design activities (architectural, mechanical, electrical, etc.).

To earn PDH credits for this course, the student must pass a multiple choice quiz of fifteen (15) questions.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • About the Architectural Engineer professional registration and the career benefits and enterprise opportunities it offers
  • How you can qualify for, take and pass the Architectural Engineering professional registration examination
  • How the Architectural Engineer registration provides a building design-focused alternative registration, or as an additional registration to complement a traditional registration such as in civil, mechanical or electrical engineering.
