Overview
This course covers the use of Excel in engineering. You will need Office 2007 or Excel 2007 to follow examples in the course. You do not need prior knowledge in the use of Excel. The course covers terms used in Excel and the user interface.
You will learn how to make a worksheet and chart sheets (graphs) in Excel. The examples cover rectangular, semi-log and log-log graphs. The course covers many of the 341 built-in functions in Excel for converting units, statistics and those used to solve simultaneous equations. It even covers how to insert special characters like O and f into Excel.
Excel 2007 for Engineers is an excellent starting point for new Excel users, for those upgrading to Excel 2007 from other versions of the program, or for those who just need a refresher on the basic functions of the program.
A self-installing file can be downloaded to add the example worksheets to your hard drive. This course requires that you have Office 2007 / Excel 2007. Worksheet files should not be installed if you do not have the applicable program.
The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty (20) questions at the end of the course to obtain PDH credits.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Become familiar with terms used in Excel such as workbook, worksheet, chart sheet, cell address, etc.
- Become familiar with the user interface in Excel such as name box, formula bar, ribbon, sheet tabs, etc.
- How to create a worksheet
- Know the order of precedence of operators
- How to create a chart sheet
- How to plot a rectangular graph based on an equation
- How to insert special characters in Excel
- How to plot a log-log graph, add a trend line and display the equation for the line on the graph
- How to plot a semi-log graph with trend line, equation and annotation
- How to use the CONVERT function in Excel
