Overview
This package has been specially designed by PDHengineer.com to provide 10 PDH at a highly discounted price. And, if you Refer a PE, you can get a FREE 1 PDH Ethics course as well. You could save up to 38% on PDH credits guaranteed to be accepted by your state board.
The package consists of two of our most popular Civil Engineering / Coastal Engineering courses in one easy-to-complete package that will earn 10 PDH.
Course 1 - Coastal Engineering - Tides, Datums and Long Waves (4 PDH)
Our coastlines are the interface between water and land. The coastal engineer must evaluate the interactions, and unique forces of this environment in all aspects of planning and design. Any project in the coastal environment will need to define its location in terms of datums. The coastal environment has a specific set of datums that reference water level changes over periods of hours, days, years , centuries and even epochs.
Forces unique to the coastal environment are generated by waves, tides, and storm surges. This course will introduce (or review) these factors that influence all coastal processes and coastal engineering design criteria.
The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty (20) questions at the end of this course to obtain PDH credits.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Define and describe the astronomical forces that generate tides
- Understand the classification of waves
- Recognize a variety of water surface datums
- Relate various water surface datums to coastal engineering design considerations
- Understand the mechanisms and importance of storm surges
- Differentiate the components of long wave numerical models
Course 2 - Coastal Engineering - Hydrodynamics of Tidal Inlets (6 PDH)
A tidal inlet is a narrow channel that connects a large body of water (usually the open sea) with a smaller body of water such as a lagoon or estuary. The earliest concern of coastal engineering at tidal inlets was navigation. Natural tidal inlets are known to migrate, open or close as the wind, wave, and storm systems change over time. Coastal engineers are now involved in tidal inlet design, management and optimization, both for commercial and recreational navigation and for the environmental health of the lagoon or estuary system behind the inlet and the beaches on the ocean side of the inlet.
This course reviews the elements of the tidal inlet and some of the methods used in describing, evaluating and predicting the hydrodynamics of this environment.
The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of thirty (30) questions at the end of this course to earn PDH credits.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Know the important characteristics and functions of inlets
- Have working knowledge of basic vocabulary describing inlet hydrodynamics
- Understand the interaction between hydrodynamic forces and sediment movements at tidal inlets
- Recognize patterns of alteration caused by inlet weir jetties
- Identify methods used to predict channel shoaling
