Overview
Onsite wastewater treatment systems (OWTS) are used to treat wastewater in applications ranging from rural single-family dwellings to industrial plants located in densely populated areas. Unlike sophisticated community wastewater treatment facilities, performance monitoring of onsite treatment systems has not typically been required by regulations. Thus, the importance of properly designing an OWTS to prevent contamination of nearby surface and ground waters cannot be overstated.
This course will cover OWTS performance design, from estimating influent wastewater characteristics and flow to transport and fate of wastewater pollutants in the receiving environment. Additionally, the course will examine methods for establishing and measuring effluent performance requirements at a specified performance boundary.
In this course the student will review Chapter 3, "Establishing Treatment System Performance Requirements" in Document EPA/625/R-00/008, Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems Manual, published by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of thirty (30) questions at the end of this course to earn PDH credits.
