Bottomless Culvert Scour Study

Course No. C-4033

Credit: 4 PDH

Course Fee: $115.80 Purchase course

Subject Matter Expert: Vincent D. Reynolds, M.B.A., P.E.

Overview

Culverts are generally used to move water from one side of a road to the other. They are often used as alternatives to bridges. Culverts can be four sided or three sided, depending on the application cost and other design factors. The three sided culverts are bottomless and are useful to decrease the amount of environmental impacts along its length.

This course will address several design options that can be used to reduce scour at the inlet and outlet of both upstream and downstream bottomless culverts. After reading this 4 hour course the student will have valuable information that can be used to perform a bottomless culvert scour study.

The course materials are based solely on the materials “Bottomless Culvert Scour Study – Laboratory Results” as published on the website of the Federal Highway Administration.

To receive PDH credit, the student must take a multiple choice quiz of twenty (20) questions.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Types of cases where bottomless culverts could be used
  • Locations along the culvert where the deepest scour occurs
  • How to use Lauren’s methods to determine the critical velocity
  • The effects of wingwalls on shear stress
  • The effects of cross vanes on scour
  • The characteristics of scour when considering unsubmerged and submerged flows
  • Alternatives to streamlined wingwall
  • How to reduce vortex shedding
