Overview
The coastal zone has seen many changes over the past few decades, as humans have built homes and recreational facilities to take advantage of mild climates and desirable life styles. Development has increased from a few cottages and boat ramps to entire communities, parks and resorts – with the infrastructure that accompanies this growth. The coastal zone is a complex environment with a vital estuarine ecosystem that serves as nursery to many food resources, as well as a filter system for water quality. Tidal creeks are an integral part of the estuarine ecosystem and have been proven to act as a sentinel – giving early warning information that can be used to assess and forecast the impacts of land use changes. These changes have immediate and long-term impacts on the health and well being of the estuarine and coastal ecosystems, including fisheries as well as human health and safety.
