Coastal Zone Management - Climate Change Planning Guide

Course No. C-5016

Credit: 5 PDH

Course Fee: $139.95 Purchase course

Subject Matter Expert: Donna C. Rona, P.E., PhD

Overview

Climate is always changing. The degree to which it is caused or influenced by human activity is under scrutiny – but the simple fact is that climate is always changing. Therefore the current trend in climate changes must be a significant factor in all coastal zone management plans. This course reviews the factors involved in climate change that impact the coastal zone (sea level rise, air temperature changes, changing precipitation patterns, increasing water temperature and ocean acidification). This course breaks the process down into understanding the basic concepts of how climate change affects the coastal zone, the planning process, vulnerability assessments, adaptation strategy, and plan implementation and maintenance.

To receive credit for this course, the student must pass a multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty-five (25) questions.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Know the important characteristics of the planning process and the factors and timing involved in planning for coastal changes
  • Understand how climate change may impact the health and safety of coastal communities as well as the economy and food supply
  • Knowledge of basic vocabulary describing coastal management and climate change
  • Understand the interaction between science and economic based decisions in the short and long term process of coastal planning
  • Recognize patterns of change and their ecologic and economic significance
  • Identify methods used to plan, predict, and modify the components of a coastal zone management plan
