Filter Backwash Recycling Rule - Practical Guidance

Course No. C-8009

Credit: 8 PDH

Course Fee: $214.95 Purchase course

Subject Matter Expert: Raymond Ehrhard, P.E.

Overview

The Filter Backwash Recycling Rule (FBRR) under the Safe Drinking Water Act establishes regulatory provisions governing the way that certain recycle streams are handled within the treatment processes of conventional and direct filtration water treatment systems. The FBRR also establishes reporting and recordkeeping requirements for recycle practices that will allow States and EPA to better evaluate the impact of recycle practices on overall drinking water treatment plant performance.

This course has been developed to provide operators and consulting engineers with the practical guidance and relevant information to assist them in complying with the FBRR provisions. It outlines detailed methods for complying with each portion of the FBRR, and provides other useful information regarding recycle practices and filter backwashing not specifically required by the FBRR. It will also assist those professionals that work in the upgrading and expansions of existing drinking water facilities or the design of new facilities.

In this course the student will learn some of the basics of drinking water filtrations systems and how recycling practices may affect the operation. Information on how to comply with the provisions of the FBRR is presented. The course is suitable for a student with basic water treatment knowledge or for an advanced student that needs to brush up on water treatment basics. It is geared toward treatment plant operators and those consulting engineers involved with water plant designs and upgrades.

The student is expected to read and review the material contained in the Filter Backwash Recycling Rule Technical Guidance Manual, EPA Office of Groundwater and Drinking Water (4606M), EPA 816-R-02-014, December 2002.

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of forty (40) questions at the end of this course to obtain 8 PDH credits.
