Gas Absorption for Air Pollution Control
Raymond Ehrhard, P.E.
Overview
Gas absorbers are used extensively in industry for
separation and purification of gas streams, as product recovery devices, and as
pollution control devices. Absorption is a process
where one or more soluble components of a gas mixture are dissolved in a liquid
(i.e., a solvent). There are different types of absorption equipment.
This course looks at the various absorbers used to control gas streams with
pollutant concentrations ranging from 250 to 10,000 ppmv. The focus on this
course will be a detailed design and operating review of packed towers.
In this course the student will learn the theory
of absorption and how it is applied to actual packed tower designs. The
conditions for particle removal and its effects on absorption equipment
selection are presented. The course will be beneficial for a student with
basic knowledge of air pollution control equipment and an interest in
controlling acid gas streams. It is also an excellent overview for those
professionals working in the field of air pollution control.
The student is expected to read and review the material contained
in EPA Air Pollution Control Cost Manual Section 5– SO2 and
Acid Controls, Chapter 1 Wet Scrubbers for Acid Gas, EPA/452/B-02-001.
The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of
twenty (20) questions at the end of
this course to obtain 4 PDH credits.
