Geotechnical Aspects of Pavement - Part I

Course No. C-15002

Credit: 15 PDH

Course Fee: $349.95 Purchase course

Subject Matter Expert: Vincent D. Reynolds, M.B.A., P.E.

Overview

Both flexible and rigid pavement requires a rigid subgrade in order to function safely and efficiently. The structural system would fail if either section of the structural element is deficient. This course will present to the engineer the geotechnical aspects of pavement design. Details on geotechnical exploration and characterization of base and subbase materials will be studied.

This course is Part I of a two-part series. Part I will focus on the geotechnical factors influencing pavement design and performance.

After reading this 15 hour course the student will have valuable information that can be used to effectively design, and evaluate pavement subgrade systems. The course is based solely on the document “Geotechnical Aspects of Pavement” as published by the Federal Highway Administration.

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of seventy-five (75) questions at the end of the course to obtain PDH credits.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • The historical perspective of pavement design
  • Geotechnical exploration and testing
  • Geotechnical inputs for pavement design
  • Subgrade characterization
  • Physical and mechanical properties of soils
  • How freeze/thaw can affect pavement surfaces
  • How excess water infiltrates through the pavement
  • How the depth of groundwater and bedrock can affect the pavement
  • How to classify various soil types
  • Geotechnical issues in pavement design and performance
