Coastal Engineering - Harbor Hydrodynamics

Course No. C-8018

Credit: 8 PDH

Course Fee: $214.95 Purchase course

Subject Matter Expert: Donna C. Rona, P.E., PhD

Overview

While a harbor is any sheltered part of a body of water deep enough to provide anchorage for ships or a place of refuge – they are best known as the economic heart of major coastal cities. The nation’s commerce and security depend on harbors. For coastal engineers, the facilities such as commercial port structures, recreational marinas, fuel docks, along with the navigation channels and protective structures are a central focus.

This course introduces and discusses the critical basic topics of harbor hydrodynamics, including wave diffraction, transmission, reflection, harbor oscillations, flushing and circulation and vessel interactions.

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of forty (40) questions at the end of this course to obtain PDH credits.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Define and describe wave diffraction and reflection in harbors
  • Understand wave transmission over and through harbor structures
  • Differentiate wave reflections from structures, beaches and harbor entrances
  • Identify a variety of harbor oscillations
  • Relate tidal, wind and river effects to flushing and circulation processes in harbors
  • Recognize vessel interactions with currents and waves
  • Relate harbor hydrodynamics to the needs of vessels such as maneuverability in restricted waterways and mooring requirements
