Overview
This course will examine the hydrologic cycle in order to determine run-off from various land covers encountered in highway design. All facets of the hydrologic cycle will be studied including meteorology, geo-hydrology, sheet flow, channel design, and hydrographs. Several different methods will be presented to determine time of concentration and peak discharge such are regression equations, the SCS graphical method, and the rational method among others.
Highway designers are concerned with the way that water moves on the earth’s surface and crosses transportation arterials. Highway designers are also concerned with providing drainage for curb and gutters, medians, detention basins and interchanges. This course is part II of a two part series. Part II will cover the Hydrograph routing, Detention pond analysis and design, and special topics in hydrology, including; wetland, snowmelt, and Arid Lands.
The course materials are based solely on the materials “Highway Hydrology” as published on the website of the Federal Highway Administration.
The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of seventy-five (75) questions at the end of the course to obtain PDH credits.
