Overview
There is an estimated 60,000 road miles in the United States that can be called coastal highway. The highways in the coastal environments have unique challenges than highways located far inland. These challenges can be attributed to storm surges, high tides, and bridge scour, among others.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) describes Coastal engineering as the planning, design, construction and operation of infrastructure projects in the unique wave, tide and sand environment that is unique to the coast. This course will provide the student with the knowledge of the coastal environment to implement into their highway design.
The course materials are based solely on the materials “Highways in the Coastal Environment” as published on the website of the Federal Highway Administration. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of course materials.
To receive PDH credit, the student must take a multiple choice quiz of sixty (60) questions.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

- The average sea level rise along United States coasts
- How to define hurricanes, tropical storms, and tropical depressions
- Causes of storm surges
- Causes of Tsunamis
- How the study of coastal waves changed before the Landings at Normandy on D-Day
- How to differentiate the different types and characteristics of waves
- How revetments can be used to protect shorelines
- How coastal roadways can act as weirs during storm surge
- The main cause of bridge failures in the United States
