Coastal Engineering - Hydrodynamics of Tidal Inlets

Course No. C-6009

Credit: 6 PDH

Course Fee: $164.95 Purchase course

Subject Matter Expert: Donna C. Rona, P.E., PhD

Overview

A tidal inlet is a narrow channel that connects a large body of water (usually the open sea) with a smaller body of water such as a lagoon or estuary. The earliest concern of coastal engineering at tidal inlets was navigation. Natural tidal inlets are known to migrate, open or close as the wind, wave, and storm systems change over time. Coastal engineers are now involved in tidal inlet design, management and optimization, both for commercial and recreational navigation and for the environmental health of the lagoon or estuary system behind the inlet and the beaches on the ocean side of the inlet.

This course reviews the elements of the tidal inlet and some of the methods used in describing, evaluating and predicting the hydrodynamics of this environment.

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of thirty (30) questions at the end of this course to earn PDH credits.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Know the important characteristics and functions of inlets
  • Have working knowledge of basic vocabulary describing inlet hydrodynamics
  • Understand the interaction between hydrodynamic forces and sediment movements at tidal inlets
  • Recognize patterns of alteration caused by inlet weir jetties
  • Identify methods used to predict channel shoaling
