Overview
In general, concrete construction using low-density concrete is quite similar to using normal-density concrete. Constructability considerations related to mixing, placing, curing, pumping, and testing controls must be addressed in order to maximize the quality of concrete and avoid problems during construction. The use of low-density concrete provides several advantages with the primary, and most obvious, benefit being a 15 to 25% savings in weight without sacrificing the overall strength of a structure. However, its use can result in a considerable impact to the structural design and cost of the structure.
In this course, the student will review Engineer Circular (EC) 1110-2-6055, “Engineering and Design – Construction Considerations for Low-Density Concrete” published by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (issued 30 August 2002). This course is most relevant to engineers involved with, or wishing to attain knowledge on, construction using low-density concrete.
The student is recommended to review the companion course “Low-Density Concrete: Properties” based on Engineer Circular (EC) 1110-2-6054. The referenced course provides detailed information on the properties of low-density concrete and its comparison to normal-density concrete.
The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of ten (10) questions at the end of this course to earn PDH credits.
