Maintenance of Concrete
Tomas Orihuela, P.E.
Overview
Concrete can deteriorate over time due to a number
of factors including moisture penetration, chemical attack and physical damage.
Selection of a suitable coating system, combined with proper surface
preparation, application and curing of the coating, can significantly increase
the service life of concrete subjected to harsh operating environments.
Aesthetics are also an important consideration in many concrete installations.
A variety of methods are available to remove stains from concrete and to prepare
a concrete surface for application of a coating system. This course covers
the methods for cleaning concrete stains and the coating systems that should be
selected to protect concrete from different types of service environments.
In this course, the student will review Chapter 7,
Maintenance of Concrete from Engineer Manual (EM) 1110-2-2002,
“Engineering and Design – Evaluation and Repair of Concrete Structures”
published by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (issued 30 June 1995). This course
is most relevant to engineers working with, or wishing to attain knowledge on,
maintenance of concrete.
The student must take a
multiple-choice quiz consisting of ten (10) questions at the end of this course
to earn PDH credits.
