Coastal Engineering - Meteorology and Wave Climate

Course No. C-6010

Credit: 6 PDH

Course Fee: $165.95 Purchase course

Subject Matter Expert: Donna C. Rona, P.E., PhD

Overview

Every coastal engineer must understand the forces at work in this dynamic environment. Meteorology, being the branch of science that deals with the analysis and prediction of weather, provides insight and understanding of the primary generating phenomena of waves, the dominant component of all forces in the coastal environment. This course provides an overview of the field of meteorology as it relates to wave climate, and includes equations, charts and references basic for every coastal engineer.

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of thirty (30) questions at the end of this course to obtain PDH credits.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Know the basic vocabulary of meteorology and wave generation
  • Understand basic meteorological and wind wave generation formula
  • Identify boundary layer interactions
  • Relate stages of wave development to fetch
  • Define and describe various meteorological phenomena that relate to coastal engineering
