Pedestrian Signal Configuration
Robert Hintersteiner, P.E.
Overview
This four hour course will discuss Pedestrian Signal configurations used to
provide pedestrian indications at intersections for the safe crossing of
pedestrians with conflicting traffic movements, that conforms to the latest 2003
Edition to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (USDOT MUTCD). It is
necessary to conduct a pedestrian count across all approaches to the
intersection to determine the number of pedestrians crossing, the type of
pedestrian (elderly, children, adults, and/or handicap persons with different
types of mobility impairments). The Traffic Engineer has to provide for
pedestrians safely, while balancing vehicular traffic flow without causing delay
and traffic congestion.
Students of this course will be able to master the operations, the purpose of
the pedestrian signal indications, and the impacts of the Americans with
Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements on pedestrian configurations. These
relationships, if not properly mastered, can cause vehicle and pedestrian
accidents within the intersection involving years of litigation.
At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to determine:
-
The regulations governing the installation of Pedestrian Signals
-
The meaning of each Pedestrian Signal indication and its usage.
-
The placement of the Pedestrian Signal within the intersection.
-
When to use Accessible Pedestrian Signals and Pedestrian Detectors
-
The use of In-Roadway Lights as an alternate to midblock signals.
The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty (20) questions
at the end of the course to obtain PDH credits.
