Overview
The use of shoulder rumble strips (SRS) have been attributed to lower run-off-road crashes due to fatigue and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This course will cover the practices of SRS and how its practice alerts the driver to steer the vehicle off of the shoulder.
The League of American Bicyclists (LAB) has expressed concerns about their safety with the use of shoulder rumble strips. As a result of this concern, the FHWA has since been involved in producing a report on the current SRS practices, policies, designs, and usage.
This 3-hour course would be of interest to all engineers involved in transportation engineers as well as all of those people that drive or are passengers in motor vehicles. To study this course the student will be directed to the FHWA report Synthesis of Shoulder Rumble Strip Practices and Policies on the FHWA website.
The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of fifteen (15) questions at the end of the course to obtain PDH credits.
