Overview
Material handling & movement is an essential, ongoing activity at any construction site. Slings are the most common apparatus in handling & moving building materials, enabling cranes & hoists to hold suspended heavy loads. Unfortunately, OSHA Table R25 shows that fasteners, such as slings, were the source of 13,360 non-fatal injuries in 2008. Usage of slings provides significant opportunity for injury on the job site. Therefore, proper selection, maintenance, and use of slings should be integral to construction safety.
This course is intended for engineers in the construction industry who 1) oversee project tasks involving loads suspended with slings, and 2) desire a general understanding of OSHA’s guidance on sling safety. The course material is based on publication OSHA 3072 Sling Safety.
To earn credit for this course, you must pass a multiple choice quiz consisting of ten (10) questions.

- Pros & cons of the 3 groups of slings: chain, wire rope & mesh, and fiber rope
- Sling maintenance
- Factors that affect usage, such as rated capacity, center of gravity, and leg angle
