Superpave Mixture Design
Overview
Superpave has become the hot-mix asphalt mixture
design method of choice of most state highway agencies across the United
States. Early performance tests showed very rapid rutting failures. In order
to determine the causes of the rapid rutting failures, a team of academicians,
asphalt industry experts, and state highway officials was established to study
the early failures and to provide recommendations to revise Superpave design
procedures. The Superpave Mixture Design Guide was prepared by this team to
establish a good guide on the design of Superpave mixtures and to be a useful
companion to the National Asphalt Pavement Association’s “Superpave Construction
Guidelines”.
In
this course, the student will review the U.S. Department of Transportation,
Federal Highway Administration’s publication “Superpave Mixture Design Guide”
(Feb. 2001).
The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of fifteen (15) questions
at the end of the course to obtain PDH credits.
