Overview
The US coastlines extend over 95,000 miles over 24 states, containing 5 of the 10 most populous cities, and roughly 30 percent of the population. The dynamic surf zone is the interface between water and land. Within this zone, energy is transferred, cliffs eroded, shorelines shifted and changed. Ripples of waves may gently lap on expanses of sand, or 39 foot waves may batter the land. Within this zone, recreational and fisheries activities have expanded, creating a critical economic component of most coastal states.
This course presents the basic definitions and equations that describe the hydrodynamics of the surf zone, including water waves, wave setup, runup, and nearshore currents.
The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of fifteen (15) questions at the end of this course to earn PDH credits.
