Introduction to Industrial Control Systems

Course No. IC-1001

Credit: 1 PDH

Course Fee: $28.95 Purchase course

Subject Matter Expert: Edward Kenney, P.E.

Overview

This course introduces the student to the very basics of industrial control systems. "What is a batch process versus a continuous process?... What are the basic components of a process control loop?... What is an HMI and how does it interact with a PLC?" Get answers to all these questions and more. Learn what a discreet signal is and how it differs from a control loop. Find out why controllers are placed in a climate controlled control room and not on the plant floor. Some of the reasons are obvious, but others may surprise you.

This course is written at a level that can be understood by engineers of all disciplines. No prerequisite knowledge of control systems is needed to complete this course. However, you will come away from the course with a solid understanding of industrial control systems basics, which you can use as the foundation to increase your knowledge in subsequent courses.

This course is recommended for electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, process engineers, chemical engineers, civil engineers and even structural engineers who have a need or a desire to learn the basics of industrial control system design. Even if you are not directly responsible for the control systems design, the instrumentation and controls impact every discipline and a thorough understanding of the basics will improve your ability to interface with your colleagues, particularly your control systems engineer.

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of ten (10) questions at the end of this course to obtain PDH credits.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Batch vs. continuous process, including examples
  • The functions performed by a transmitter
  • The meaning of the acronyms PLC, DCS, HMI, and SCADA
  • The function of a HMI and how it interfaces with the PLC
  • Discreet controls vs. control loops
