Overview

This course includes guidance and considerations on the selection of alternative wastewater collection systems for suburban, rural and semi-rural settings and development areas where the use of conventional gravity sewers could prove to be prohibitively expensive.

In the course material, the reader will review several of the most common types of alternative collection systems, including those used in combination with grinder pump systems and septic tank effluent pumps, as well as the small diameter gravity sewer systems without pumps. Information is included on the advantages and disadvantages of each system, general design parameters, performance data, and cost data.

This course is based on the USEPA publication technology fact sheets for “Pressure Sewers” and “Small Diameter Gravity Sewers” (EPA 832-F-00-038).

To earn PDH credit for the course, the reader must pass a multiple choice quiz of fifteen (15) questions.

 

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Become familiar with some of the most common types of alternative wastewater collection systems
  • Learn under what conditions alternative sewers are usually more cost-effective than conventional gravity systems
  • Identify the advantages and disadvantages of each type of system and important considerations when designing systems components
