Overview
Ground water is the primary source of drinking water for approximately 50% of the US population, making it one of the Nation’s most precious resources. Little appreciated is the fact that groundwater is also a major component in the water balance of streams, lakes and wetlands, making it even more precious. Largely unnoticed, dynamic ground water systems are continually reacting to short and long term changes in climate, land use, and ground water withdrawal for human and agricultural use. Until now, systematic measurements of water levels have been fragmented and poorly coordinated between state and federal jurisdictions. Monitoring, evaluating, and decision making requires long term monitoring of ground water quality as well as level.
This course reviews the uses and importance of data from long-term ground-water-level monitoring in the United States, including case studies as examples of the broad applicability of long-term ground-water-level data to water-resource issues commonly faced by hydrologists, engineers, regulators, and resource managers and critical to the general public.
To receive credit for this course, the student must pass a multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty (20) questions.
