Overview
The deterioration of the physical condition of aging sewer systems along with increasing regulatory control of wet weather overflows has resulted in a significant need for rehabilitation of existing collection systems. Sanitary collection systems play a critical role in protecting human health and the environment. Sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) result when these systems fail, posing health and environmental risks.
One of the most important and challenging elements to reducing or eliminating sanitary sewer overflows is condition assessment, including an effective sanitary sewer evaluation survey (SSES). Condition assessment seeks to locate and characterize specific defects or inadequacies of the sewer system and quantify them in terms of contributing to overflow and/or backup problems. Condition assessment sets the critical basis for selecting and implementing the specific rehabilitation measures designed to reduce infiltration/inflow (I/I), repair structural defects, regain or increase hydraulic capacity, and prioritize a rehabilitation plan in a cost-effective manner.
This course is based solely on Chapters 8 and 9 of the ASCE/USEPA publication “Sanitary Sewer Overflow Solutions.”
To receive PDH credit, the student must take a multiple choice quiz of fifty (50) questions.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Become familiar with methods used for locating sewer system overflows (SSO’s)
- Understand the techniques and methods for assessing and quantifying sources of inflow/infiltration
- Improve familiarity with equipment and instrumentation used for condition assessment
- Improve ability to identify conditions that cause or worsen sewer deterioration
- Become familiar with various sewer rehabilitation techniques and materials, including trenchless technology
- Gain insight on selecting the appropriate technology for a given sewer system replacement or rehabilitation project to help reduce overflows, restore structural integrity, and restore valuable capacity
