Septic Tank Systems for Large Flow Applications

Course No. EN-2002

Credit: 2 PDH

Course Fee: $57.90 Purchase course

Subject Matter Expert: Stephen J. Huskie, P.E.

Overview

Often, in areas remote from centralized wastewater collection and treatment systems, septic tank systems are used for applications involving residential cluster systems, restaurants, nursing homes, and other commercial or institutional facilities. There is the potential to overlook important design considerations, which can differ substantially from the typical residential septic system.

The course materials review the basis of septic system design and the importance of various factors associated with large flow or commercial applications. This course also provides an excellent review of some of the most important considerations for septic tank – soil absorption system design and the benefits of using septic tank effluent filters.

This course is based solely on the USEPA publications “Septic Tank Systems for Large Flow Applications” (EPA 832-F-00-079) and “Septic Tank Effluent Screens”.

To receive PDH credit, the student must take a multiple choice quiz of twenty (20) questions.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Become familiar with some of the most important considerations for designing septic systems for large flow applications
  • Learn the recommended design parameters that can differ from standard single residence septic system design
  • Review the benefits and operational considerations associated with the use of septic tank effluent screens
  • Gain insight into cost parameters and operation and maintenance considerations
  • Gain insight into using a more detailed site assessment approach when dealing with large flow applications for septic systems
