Stormwater Runoff Control Using Green Roofs

Course No. EN-3014

Credit: 3 PDH

Course Fee: $86.85 Purchase course

Subject Matter Expert: Vincent D. Reynolds, M.B.A., P.E.

Overview

With the spread of environmental awareness and stricter rules regarding pollution; water quality and how it can be improved is a hot topic for engineers, municipalities, land developers, and the general public. Recent advances in stormwater runoff pollution control have addressed the water pollution problem such as green roofs.

This course will cover the use of green roofs and their use in decreasing stormwater runoff pollution. Green roofs decrease the amount of impervious surface in a developed zone thus decreasing the impacts of stormwater runoff.

After reading this 3 hour course the student will have valuable knowledge regarding the use of green roofs and how their use affects stormwater runoff. This course would be useful to engineers working in fields such as environmental and engineering, hydrology, agricultural engineering, and anyone that would like more knowledge of green roofs.

The study materials for this course are based solely on the text “Green Roofs for Stormwater Runoff Control” as published by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of fifteen (15) questions at the end of this course to earn PDH credits.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • The effects that green roofs have on other BMPs
  • The effects on green roofs on runoff chemical content
  • How to determine the atmospheric nitrate wet deposition
  • The cause of yellow color from green roof runoff
  • The typical cross-section of a green roof system
