Overview

Incineration can be an effective technology for the clean, efficient disposal of wastes. Related processes such as gasification, pyrolysis, plasma-arc and starved-air combustion have been proposed as alternatives to incineration whereas in most cases these processes are incineration process under a different name. This course defines incineration and these other thermal treatment technologies, presents critical features in the design and operation of each of them, and clarifies the true differences between each of them.

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of thirty (30) questions at the end of the course to obtain PDH credits.

 

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Be able to classify a thermal treatment process as incineration or non-incineration
  • Be knowledgeable in the proper definition and classification of systems and processes for the thermal treatment and disposal of wastes
  • Be familiar with advantages and disadvantages of the various thermal treatment processes used for waste disposal
