Underground Storage Tanks: Laws, O&M, and Leak Detection

Course No. EN-10001

Credit: 10 PDH

Course Fee: $264.95 Purchase course

Subject Matter Expert: Mark R. Knarr, P.E.

Overview

By the midpoint of fiscal year 2010, the EPA reported over 607,000 active underground storage tanks (USTs) in the United States. Most of these tanks contain liquid petroleum products; a minority contains hazardous materials. UST custodians must understand the basics regarding federal laws as well as tank operation and maintenance (O&M). Proper O&M is first line of defense in preventing UST leaks, and this in turn requires that owners/operators understand key features of their tanks: size, content, leak detection, spill control, overfill protection, and corrosion protection. Leak detection for piping is particularly important, because most leaks come from an UST's piping. Leak detection alerts of problems underground that may not be observable on the surface.

In this course, the student will review the following EPA publications:

  • EPA 510-K-95-002, Musts For USTs: A Summary Of Federal Regulations For Underground Storage Tank Systems, July 1995
  • EPA 510-K-95-004, Dollars And Sense: Financial Responsibility Requirements for Underground Storage Tanks, July 1995
  • EPA 510-B-05-002, Operating And Maintaining Underground Storage Tank Systems: Practical Help And Checklists, September 2005
  • EPA 510-B-05-001, Straight Talk on Tanks: Leak Detection Methods For Petroleum Underground Storage Tanks And Piping, September 2005
  • EPA 510-B-93-005, Manual Tank Gauging for Small Underground Storage Tanks, November 1993

The target audience is engineers and managers whose responsibilities include management of USTs, but may have limited experience with it.

To receive PDH credit for this course, the student must pass a quiz of fifty (50) questions.
