Water Budgets: Environmental Management Tool

Course No. EN-6004

Credit: 6 PDH

Course Fee: $164.95 Purchase course

Subject Matter Expert: Donna C. Rona, P.E., PhD

Overview

Ensuring sustainable water supplies requires an understanding of how water moves through Earth’s atmosphere, land surface, and subsurface in a process known as the “hydrologic cycle”. A water budget is an accounting of the rates of water movement and the change in water throughout the elements of the hydrologic cycle, and provides a format to evaluate availability and sustainability of a water supply. While simple in concept, water budgets are often difficult to accurately describe and quantify.

This course provides an overview of the hydrologic cycle and a discussion of methods and uncertainties in determining water budgets. Examples illustrate the importance of water budgets to humans and the environment and demonstrate how water budgets can be incorporated into management practices.

In order to earn PDH credit for this course, the reader will need to pass a multiple choice quiz of thirty-five (35) questions.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Know the important characteristics of the hydrologic cycle
  • Have working knowledge of basic vocabulary describing water cycles and budgets
  • Understand the interaction between sources and uses of water
  • Recognize the regional differences in water resources based on local climatic, geologic and land use differences
  • Identify methods used to track and define water resources
