Backfill for Subsurface Structures

Course No. G-6004

Credit: 6 PDH

Course Fee: $164.95 Purchase course

Subject Matter Expert: Vincent D. Reynolds, P.E., MBA

Overview

The construction of subsurface structures may present a unique challenge for backfilling operations. Engineers and contractors accustomed to placing backfill over native soil will have to consider new methods of placing backfill over subsurface structures including lateral loadings and surcharge. This course will present guidance to engineers, and field personnel involved in designing and constructing backfill operations around subsurface structures and conduits.

After completing this 6 hour course the student will have gained valuable knowledge in designing and constructing subsurface structures.

The study materials for this course are based solely on the text “Backfill for Subsurface Structures” as published by the Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC).

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of thirty (30) questions at the end of this course to earn PDH credits.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • How to minimize backfill settlement
  • Various methods to test soil compaction
  • Typical compaction ranges of various soil materials
  • Problems encountered during excavation
  • How to determine the typical coefficients of permeability for various soil types
  • How to determine the critical depth in compacted soil
  • Characteristics of coarse – grained soil
  • Proper way to adjust water content to optimize compaction
  • The effects of freezing on compacted backfill
  • Problems encountered in field density measurements
  • How to define the induced lateral pressure against a wall
  • How to compact soil in confined zones
  • Excavation control techniques
  • Backfill quality control
  • Selection of backfill materials
  • How the zero air voids line relate to compaction
  • How to recognize backfill problem areas
  • Causes of lateral pressures along walls during soil compaction

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz . PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
