Proper Respirator Selection and Use in Industry and Construction

Course No. H-3003

Credit: 3 PDH

Course Fee: $86.85 Purchase course

Subject Matter Expert: Charles D. Leonard, CIH

Overview

Respirators are commonly used personal protective equipment and are commonly used when engineering controls are not feasible, such as short duration remediation of asbestos, lead and mold, for emergency response or for emergency escape situations. Workers are deployed to a potentially hazardous environment, so proper respirator selection is critical to worker health. Respiratory protection program deficiencies are consistently among OSHA’s Top-10 citations.

In this course, the student will review OSHA 3352-02, "Assigned Protection Factors for the Revised Respiratory Protection Standard". This publication outlines the Code of Federal Regulations (29CFR Part 1910.134) requirements for the Respiratory Protection Standard. This course is relevant to owners, engineers, managers, foreman and any other personnel working in industries that deal with hazardous chemicals including petrochemicals, transportation, construction and agriculture.

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 15 questions at the end of this course to obtain PDH credits.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Why proper respirator selection is important
  • The definitions and acronyms used
  • Guidance for respirator selection: types of respirators and their application
  • The requirements for respiratory protection program implementation
  • The requirements for Medical evaluations, fit testing and respirator maintenance
  • Respiratory Protection program evaluation and employee training requirements
