Overview

This is an introduction to cathodic protection for underground structures such as tanks and pipelines. It covers the two principal methods used to mitigate corrosion: the sacrificial anode and impressed current systems. It introduces you to the nine steps in designing a sacrificial anode system, the thirteen steps in designing an impressed current system, and the field testing requirements needed for both. It is intended for engineers and other construction professionals with a current or prospective need to understand the fundamentals of protecting underground structures such as tanks and pipelines from corrosion using sacrificial anode and impressed current cathodic protection systems.

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of fifteen(15) questions at the end of the course to obtain PDH credits.

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Site testing requirements needed to design cathodic protection systems
  • Calculating current requirements based on coating efficiency and current density
  • Nine steps in designing a sacrificial anode system
  • Thirteen steps in designing an impressed current system
  • Calculating the number of anodes needed in both sacrificial anode and impressed current systems
  • Calculating system life expectancy for sacrificial anode systems
  • Calculating rectifier voltage for impressed current systems
