Process Piping Part 4 - Corrosion Protection and Lining of Piping Systems

Course No. M-1028

Credit: 1 PDH

Course Fee: $28.95

Edward J. Brown, P.E.

Overview

This 1-hour online course covers two topics:

  • Metallic piping with linings to provide protection from corrosive products. This portion of the course addresses the properties, services, and selection of various lining materials. It provides information about chemical compatibilities, temperature limitations, and connection requirements.
  • The protection of metallic piping systems against corrosion in applications above grade and in buried applications. Information is provided about cathodic protection, electrical isolation, and protective coatings.

This course is relevant to Civil, Environmental, Sanitary, and Mechanical Engineers in the water/wastewater, manufacturing, chemical, HVAC and other industries. The course includes diagrams and illustrations and references to relevant industry standards.

The course materials consist of The US Army Corps of Engineers Publication EM1110-1-4008, Chapters 9 and 12.

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of twelve (12) questions at the end of this course to obtain PDH credits.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Understand the types of factory lining systems and the practical requirements in properly specifying and using these systems.
  • Understanding the issues relating to proper joints in lined piping systems and connections to dissimilar materials.
  • Gain familiarity with the various strategies for minimizing corrosion in piping systems.
  • Avoiding common mistakes in the selection and application of piping materials that would lead to accelerated corrosion.
