Course Fee:  $86.85

J. Edward Hardin, P.E.

Overview

This 3-hour audio online course covers evaporation and condensation.  Presumably, most of us know what these two terms mean.  But, the implications of evaporation and condensation in process streams and in industry in general are enormous.

This course examines how evaporation and condensation are used in different industries.  Evaporation is often used to remove undesirable liquids from the process train, or to evaporate off the desired liquid from other impurities.  Condensation is performed for a variety of reasons.  A typical application is to remove an entrained liquid from a gas stream.

The course author, who has over 40 years of experience with process systems, provides the insight of an engineer who has "been there and done it".

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of fifteen (15) questions at the end of this course to obtain PDH credits.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Attained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Definitions of evaporation and condensation

  • Sublimating and crystallizing materials

  • Industrial applications for evaporation

  • Air stripping and the use of other carrier gases for evaporation

  • The use of Vapor Recompression Evaporation to realize energy gains in a process

  • Removal of non-condensable fluids in an evaporation process

  • Use of eductors and pumps to move vapors and non-condensable fluids in an evaporation process

  • Differences between drop-wise and film-wise condensation

  • Scrubber type condensation vs. condensation in heat exchangers

  • Wire mesh demisters for removal of small liquid droplets at the outlet of a scrubber

  • Selection of forced draft vs. induced draft fans for scrubbers

  • Liquid level detection and removal in gas heat exchangers

  • Design of condensate collection systems
