Overview
Filtration of air is crucial to the HVAC system performance and the commercial and industrial applications that these systems serve. Filters are widely used in nuclear ventilation, air cleanup, and confinement systems to remove particulate matter from air and gas streams. Air filters are defined as porous structures through which air is passed to separate out entrained particulate matter. The word “filter” is derived from a word for the fabric called felt, pieces of which have been used for air and liquid filtration for hundreds of years. The air we breathe when we are inside facilities is generally filtered in the HVAC system with the intent of providing acceptable breathable air quality. In industrial applications the air is filtered in order to provide the quality of air necessary for the process.
In this course the student will learn about filters used in critical applications. The information contained in this course is applicable to many applications for various industries including the nuclear industry that is discussed in this course. The course includes a significant general discussion about filter types, styles, ratings, performance testing, etc. for HEPA, ULPA, pre-filters and other types of filters.
The student is expected to read and review the material contained in the DOE Handbook Nuclear Air Cleaning Handbook, DOE HDBK-1169-2003 Chapter 3 – Filters In The Nuclear Industry.
The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty (20) questions at the end of this course to obtain PDH credits.
