Fire and Smoke Damper Selection

Course No. M-2040 Back to HVAC Courses
Credit: 2 PDH
Course Fee: $57.90

Steven G. Liescheidt, P.E., CSI-CCS, CCPR

Overview

In today’s complex building structures it is imperative that the HVAC engineer have a basic knowledge of fire, smoke and combination fire/smoke dampers. Rated dampers are a crucial part of the HVAC and life safety system requirements. Rated dampers have been modified and tested such that these dampers meet the demands of dynamic systems yet provide better benefits to the contractor and owner of the facility.

In this course the student will learn some of the basic considerations of selecting, specifying, installing and operating fire, smoke and combination fire/smoke dampers. In addition, the student will learn of new features and benefits that manufacturers of rated dampers have integrated into their products to meet the demands of current codes and standards, yet also provide total cost saving opportunities for the contractor and facility owners.

The student is expected to read the material contained in the follow Ruskin publications which have been combined into one PDF file for this course:

  • Fire & Smoke Dampers Selection and Application Manual – RFSDM-1102
  • Ruskin Labor Savors – Fire, Smoke & Fire/Smoke Dampers- LSTB 10/02
  • Engineering Reports:
    • No. 705 – UL Classification Labels and Their Meaning
    • No. 801 - Testing and Maintenance of Fire Dampers

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty (20) questions at the end of this course to obtain PDH credits.
