HVAC - Boiler Systems

Course No. M-3032

Credit: 3 PDH

Course Fee: $86.85 Purchase course

Subject Matter Expert: A. Bhatia, Mechanical Engineer

Overview

Water is a useful and cheap medium for transferring heat to the process. Boilers are fuel-burning appliances that provide a means for generating hot water or steam under pressure, which is then usable for transferring heat to the process or used as a hydronic heating system for large buildings.

There are virtually an infinite number of boiler designs, but generally they fit into one of the two categories; (1) Fire-tube boilers or as an easy way to remember “fire in tube boilers”, which contain long steel tubes through which hot gases from a furnace pass and around which the water to be changed to steam circulates and (2) Water-tube boilers or “water in tube boilers” in which the conditions are reversed with the water passing through the tubes and the furnace for the hot gases surround the water tubes.

When water is boiled into steam, its volume increases about 1600 times, producing a force that is almost as explosive as gunpowder. Proper design, selection, maintenance and operation of a boiler system is therefore important with regard to efficiency and reliability. Without this attention, boilers can be extremely dangerous and hence must be treated with the utmost respect.

This 3-hour course covers the fundamentals of steam and hot water boiler types, design, operation, and how the components of a steam generation plant interrelate. This course is based entirely on US Corps of Engineers Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (USACERL) technical report 99/20, May 1999, Appendix B - Boiler Systems.

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty (20) questions at the end of this course to obtain PDH credits.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • What is implied by forced draft, induced draft and natural draft boilers
  • What are the various types of fuel and combustion equipment used in gas fired and oil fired applications
  • How do you size a boiler for your application
  • What are the essential safety practices for installation and operation of boilers
  • What are the different types of hot water and steam boilers and how to identify fire tube and water tube boilers
  • What are the essential components of boiler systems such as safety valves, instrumentation, venting and pressure control devices and how these interrelate
  • What is the function of a feed water system and its primary components
  • What is the theory behind combustion, water flow, heat transfer, oxygen, water, and fuel reactions
  • What are the basic boiler performance testing methods and procedures
