Methods for Reducing Pump Energy Losses

Course No. M-2044

Credit: 2 PDH

Course Fee: $57.90 Purchase course

Subject Matter Expert: Steven G. Liescheidt, P.E., CSI-CCS, CCPR

Overview

A large amount of energy can be lost in pumping systems that are not properly designed and maintained. In this course, the student will review eight (8) "Pumping Systems Tip Sheets" published by the U.S. Dept. of Energy's Office of Industrial Technologies. Each tip sheet provides information on a particular component of a pumping system that can be optimized to improve the overall efficiency of the system. This course is relevant to engineers who design or maintain pumping systems, as well as engineers interested in learning more about improving the efficiency of a pumping system.

The student is expected to read and review the material contained in the US Department of Energy – EERE Pumping Tip Sheets referenced above.

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of fifteen (15) questions at the end of this course to obtain PDH credits.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • How to conduct an in-plant pumping system survey
  • How to maintain pumping systems effectively
  • Matching pumps to systems requirements
  • Optimizing parallel pumping systems
  • Pump selection considerations
  • Reducing pump costs through optimum pipe sizing
  • Selecting an energy-efficient centrifugal pump
  • Trimming or replacing impellers on oversized pumps to reduce energy consumption
