Pipe Selection and Friction Loss Calculation

Course No. M-3033

Credit: 3 PDH

Course Fee: $86.85

Manuel Calzada, P.E.

Overview

This course covers the necessary material to design and evaluate piping systems. The course is intended to be one of a series of courses that covers different areas of practical aspects of fluid mechanics. This is the first course of the series and covers the basic areas of water piping, including friction in pipes, diameter selection of pipes and pump power requirements. The next courses will cover more specific piping applications, such as flows in parallel pipes, open and closed piping systems, cooling towers, pipe insulation, and heat exchangers.

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of fifteen (15) questions at the end of this course to obtain PDH credits.

As a bonus for the student, a link to a fluid flow calculator (in an Excel File) is provided in the course quiz. This calculator, which is included in the course purchase price, is a handy tool that will save you time when performing piping pressure drop calculations.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Pressure drop calculations for fluids in pipes
  • Power requirements to pump a fluid from one point to another
  • Impact that pipe materials and fittings have on pressure drop of fluid in a pipe
  • Impact that fluid temperature may have on pressure drop of the fluid in a pipe
  • Simplification of calculations that require tedious trial and error solutions by the use of a calculator
