Overview
A large amount of energy can be lost in steam piping systems that are not properly designed and maintained. There are many opportunities available to minimize the heat loss from steam distribution systems and to maximize recovery of heat from waste steam and condensate resulting in lower overall energy costs.
In this course, the student will review ten (10) "Energy Tip Sheets" published by the U.S. Dept. of Energy's Office of Industrial Technologies. Each tip sheet provides information on a particular component of your steam distribution system that can be optimized to improve the overall efficiency of your steam system. This course is relevant to engineers who design or maintain steam systems, as well as engineers interested in learning more about improving the efficiency of a steam system. The student should have an understanding of the basic fundamentals of steam systems before taking this course. For engineers with very little knowledge of steam system basics, it is recommended that you take PDHengineer.com's course titled Steam System Basics prior to taking this course.
The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of ten questions at the end of this course to obtain PDH credits.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Minimizing heat loss through piping, valves, fittings, steam traps and open vessels.
- Using vapor recompression to recover low pressure waste steam
- Flashing high-pressure condensate to regenerate low pressure steam
- Using a vent condenser to recover flash steam energy
- Using steam to power absorption chillers and rotating equipment
