Overview
Improper design of a boiler and its associated components can result in high energy use. There are many opportunities available to optimize the design of a new boiler or to increase the efficiency of a boiler already in operation.
In this course, the student will review nine (9) "Energy Tip Sheets" published by the U.S. Dept. of Energy's Office of Industrial Technologies. Each tip sheet provides information on a particular component of your boiler that can be optimized to improve the overall efficiency of your steam system. This course is relevant to engineers who design or maintain steam systems, as well as engineers interested in learning more about improving the efficiency of a steam system. The student should have an understanding of the basic fundamentals of a boiler and it's associated components before taking this course. For engineers with very little knowledge of steam system basics, it is recommended that you take PDHengineer.com's course titled Steam System Basics prior to taking this course.
The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of ten questions at the end of this course to obtain PDH credits.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Heat recovery from economizers, boiler blowdown and condensate.
- Minimizing boiler blowdown and short cycling losses.
- Improving a boiler's combustion efficiency
- Inefficiencies resulting from scaling of waterside heat transfer surfaces
- Benchmarking the fuel costs of steam generation
- Advantages of installing a deaerator to treat feedwater.
