Theory and Application of Reciprocating
Compressors
George McKinney
Overview
This 3-hour online
course describes the applications, characteristics, and operation of positive
displacement (reciprocating) compressors. This course is oriented toward
engineers involved in specification, selection, application and operation of gas
compressors. The presentation concentrates on large industrial compressors as
in natural gas transmission and process plants, but is applicable to all
reciprocating compressor units.
The course begins with an
introduction to various positive displacement machines, then concentrates on
reciprocating compressors. These are developed to provide knowledge of machine
layout, mechanical components, machine limits and methods for control of driver
load and/or compressor throughput.
The compression process is
explained and equations are developed to describe the process and effect of
changing pressures and other machine parameters. These give insight to possible
control methods for unit throughput and engine load, and can assist in either
developing unit control systems or in evaluating logic of an existing system.
The student must take a
multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty (20) questions at the end of this
course to obtain PDH credits.
