Introduction to Offshore Oil & Gas Pipelines in the Gulf of Mexico

Course No. O-2003 Back to Oil/Gas/Petrochemical Courses
Credit: 2 PDH
Course Fee: $57.90

John P. Greaney, P.E.

Overview

In this course the student will learn about the design, construction, installation, and operation of undersea oil & gas pipelines in the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) region of the Gulf of Mexico. The OCS region extends from the limit of state jurisdiction (9 nautical miles from shore in Texas and Florida, 3 nautical miles in other states) to the US territorial limit of 200 nautical miles from shore.

Among the topics covered are engineering design criteria, advantages and disadvantages of various pipelaying methods, and operational problems like gas hydrate formation and corrosion. The course also covers environmental concerns such as mitigating the effect of ocean currents and storms on pipeline operations, and the need to avoid damage to benthic communities (i.e. the shellfish and tiny organisms living in the bottom sediments of the ocean that support the commercial fishery.)

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of fifteen (15) questions at the end of the course to obtain PDH credits.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Which Federal agencies have jurisdiction over pipelines in the Gulf of Mexico?
  • Relevant design factors for undersea oil & gas pipelines.
  • Knowledge of the capabilities of the various methods for laying undersea pipelines
  • Awareness of the environmentally sensitive areas that pipelines and pipelaying operations must avoid.
  • Knowledge of the operational problems associated with deepwater oil & gas pipelines.
