Pressure Vessel Chemical Cracking

Course No. M-1005

Credit: 1 PDH

Course Fee: $28.95

Edward P. Brunet, Jr., P.E.

Overview

Rupture or leakage of a pressure vessel can result in serious consequences, including fire and explosion, fragmentation damage and injury, suffocation or poisoning, chemical or thermal burns, environmental damage and extended loss of manufacturing capacity. Inspection programs for metallic pressure vessels and tanks has revealed a pattern of cracking in certain fluid services. Engineers involved in the design, fabrication, purchase, inspection and maintenance of pressure vessels and tanks need to be aware of the fluid services where cracking has been observed and take measures to mitigate the problem.

This course covers metallic pressure vessel cracking in some specific corrosive services. The course material used is the "Pressure Vessel Guidelines" in the OSHA technical manual.

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of ten questions at the end of this course to obtain PDH credits.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • The consequences of pressure vessel leakage or rupture failure.
  • Cracking causes and mitigations for pressure vessels operating in the following services: deaerator, amine, wet hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, pulp digester
  • Description and relative merits of nondestructive examination methods used to detect vessel cracks, including visual examination, liquid penetrant testing, magnetic particle testing, radiography and ultrasonic testing
  • Methods to improve the reliability of nondestructive testing results
