Wind and Hydropower Technologies Program

Course No. R-2001

Credit: 2 PDH

Course Fee: $57.90 Purchase course

Subject Matter Expert: Steven G. Liescheidt, P.E., CSI-CCS, CCPR

Overview

Humans have been harnessing water to perform work for thousands of years. The Greeks used water wheels for grinding wheat into flour more than 2,000 years ago. Besides grinding flour, the power of the water was used to saw wood and power textile mills and manufacturing plants.

Wind is a form of solar energy. Winds are caused by the uneven heating of the atmosphere by the sun, the irregularities of the earth's surface, and rotation of the earth. Wind flow patterns are modified by the earth's terrain, bodies of water, and vegetation. Humans use this wind flow, or motion energy, for many purposes: sailing, flying a kite, and even generating electricity.

In this course the student will learn some of the basics of both wind and hydropower systems and applications and the various types of systems available along with applications. In addition the student will gain an understanding of terminology and definitions used in these technologies.

The student is expected to read the document provided in this course which is taken from the public domain website: http://www1.eere.energy.gov/windandhydro/hydro_basics.html (06/15/09).

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty (20) questions at the end of this course to obtain 2 PDH credits.
