Traffic Signal Configuration - Revised 2010

Course No. T-6001

Credit: 6 PDH

Course Fee: $164.95 Purchase course

Subject Matter Expert: Robert T. Hintersteiner, P.E.

Overview

This six hour course will discuss the traffic signal configuration to determine the proper phasing and signal layout to be installed at an intersection that conforms to the latest 2009 Edition to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (USDOT MUTCD). To properly design a traffic signal at an intersection, the Engineer must understand all the rules and standards that govern the installation by learning the meanings of each signal indication and what can be legally installed and what is an illegal installation.

Attendee of this course will be able to master the operations, the purpose of the traffic signal indication, and the relationship of the signal heads with the approaching traffic. These relationships if not properly mastered can cause vehicle and pedestrian accidents within the intersection involving years of litigation.

At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to determine:

  • The regulations governing the installation of traffic signals.
  • The meaning of each signal indication and its usage.
  • Left and Right Turn Signal configuration alternatives.
  • Prohibited Signal Indications.
  • Flashing signal indications.
  • Flashing RED and YELLOW ARROW indications
  • The placement of the signal faces with the intersection.
  • Arrangement of the signal indications per approach.
  • The signal configuration alternatives.

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of thirty (30) questions at the end of this course to obtain PDH credits.
